A board game supporting mathematics teaching was developed at the University of Pécs

The development received special recognition at the Hungarian Innovation Grand Prix competition.

A board game supporting mathematics teaching was developed by the Pécs University of Science (PTE), in cooperation with Piatnik Budapest Kft. The Dienes Mathlab board game package for teaching mathematics is suitable for both home and educational use. In the course of the development, attractive play sets were created, both in terms of color and shape, which children are happy to get their hands on in an educational environment as well. In this complexity, a set of professional mathematical tools that can be used in teaching has not been available so far – they wrote in the announcement.

The math board game pack has two parts, “Forest Game” and “Who Gets to the Castle”, designed to be used by students for learning, not for teacher demonstration.

The PTE’s maintainer, the Universitas Quinqueecclesiensis Foundation, supported the university’s research proposal (Proof of Concept) with HUF 120 million last year, the aim of which is to utilize the intellectual products born at the University of Pécs as soon as possible in the market and economic environment. Among these, one of the supported applications was Dienes MathLab.

The toys went on sale in the sales system of Piatnik Kft. in September 2022, and already in the first quarter more than 2,100 of them were sold.

The announcement mentions that, on the initiative of the Hungarian Energy and Public Utilities Regulatory Office (MEKH), 1,000 copies of the game sets were distributed to 50 schools teaching in the Hungarian language (domestic and in the border areas), and further training was held for the teachers teaching the program.

The development received special recognition at the Hungarian Innovation Grand Prix competition.
