In many places, the used wheels are standing in huge piles and quietly disintegrating, but the problem is at least as big as the fact that small particles that are not visible to the naked eye break off from the tires rubbing on the road. The extent of the problem is clearly shown by a recently conducted research, the authors of which calculated that how much car tires enter our body annually. Moreover, the appearance of electric cars exacerbated the problem, as the tires of heavier electric cars wear out more – according to British government data, more than one million tons of pieces of rubber are released into the air every year in Europe alone, writes the Euronews. Fortunately, they have already developed the first car tire specifically designed for it for electric vehicles planned.

The solution developed by the company can perhaps be compared to a specially designed crumb vacuum cleaner that can be attached to the wheels of cars. The device uses an electrostatic solution and uses the air flow generated by the rotating wheel to suck up the pieces of rubber before they can scatter on the road. The first versions can collect up to 60 percent of the rubber waste. The collected pieces can be reused, not as car tires, but in other fields of application.

The biggest strength of Tire Collective’s technology is that it can effectively bind particles smaller than 10 microns. Pieces of this size are the most harmful to our health and the environment.

For the development, the startup received the Terra Carta Design Lab innovation award, as well as the recognition of the same name from the international design competition, the James Dyson Award.
