AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE has a bug that blocks the card’s full overclocking potential

AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE has a bug that blocks the card's full overclocking potentialAlthough overclocking computer equipment is not the domain of most ordinary users, this phenomenon is becoming more and more popular. This is, among other things, the result of the easy availability of tools that allow you to overclock components with just a few clicks. Recently, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE graphics card debuted on the European and American markets. It turns out that this model has a bug that blocks its full overclocking potential.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE has an artificial limit on the clock speed of the system and memory. According to the American company, this is a software error. Work on an appropriate fix is in progress.

The GPU in question is a good proposition in its price segment. However, the card’s launch on the European and American markets did not go perfectly. This model has an artificial overclocking limit, which we also pointed out in our test. The memory clock is locked at 2316 MHz, and the boost clock of the system itself is locked at 2803 MHz. The owner of the Hardware Unboxed YouTube channel managed to obtain AMD’s official position on this matter. The artificial clock frequency lock is the result of a software error. However, it was not specified whether this was a card firmware issue or a driver bug.

It is worth noting that the problem only affects manual overclocking of the system and does not affect the factory overclocking. In the latter case, the card operates in accordance with the parameters declared by the manufacturer. AMD is already working on removing the artificial block. Without this limitation, the Radeon RX 7900 GRE will probably make it possible to close part of the distance between it and the Radeon RX 7900 XT. However, it should be remembered that despite the similar name, it is a card from a different price segment, with noticeably worse specifications, so achieving identical performance will not be possible.
