An IT solution supporting spinal diagnostics was developed with the participation of SZTE



An application that detects MR images of the spine can speed up manual detection and contribute to a more accurate diagnosis.

The researchers of the Szeged University of Science (SZTE) have developed an IT solution that supports the diagnostic process in spine medicine in cooperation with the staff of Budai Egészségközpont Kft. and IFUA Horváth & Partners Kft.

In its statement, the higher education institution wrote: the explosive development of medical imaging technology has brought significant progress in the discovery of diseases, in the establishment of early diagnoses, and in the application of effective therapies.

According to reports, the number of imaging tests is growing twice as fast as the number of radiologists who can detect them, so the lack of specialists is a global problem. In parallel, systems using artificial intelligence are developing at a rapid pace, which are gradually making their way into healthcare applications, they added.

The three-year project with a HUF 1.179 billion budget and a HUF 718 million grant from the National Research, Development and Innovation Office has created a digital interface through automatic detection, where the cooperation between the patient and the doctor can be improved, as well as the quality and output of the care.

By scientifically processing tens of thousands of spine MR examinations, the specialists created a database containing both image and text information, which serves as the basis for the development of artificial intelligence algorithms and machine learning, they explained.

They also explained that the application that retrieves MR images of the spine can speed up manual retrieval and contribute to a more accurate diagnosis.

In the research and development project, the staff of the SZTE software development department and the artificial intelligence research group developed text and image processing artificial intelligence modules.
