Artificial intelligence will go to the next level. Microsoft and OpenAI will create a supercomputer whose cost will exceed USD 100 billion“Artificial intelligence” as we know it now is, of course, not a fully developed technology. However, large companies are now investing huge amounts of money to change this. We have just learned a bit more details about the project behind OpenAI and Microsoft. Their goal is to build a supercomputer called Stargate that will power the next generation of “artificial intelligence.” Ambitious plans may cost over USD 100 billion.

The intriguing plans of OpenAI and Microsoft have become publicly available. Over the next few years, a supercomputer will be built to power advanced “artificial intelligence.” The project may cost over USD 100 billion, making it the largest investment on the market in years.

The Information portal is responsible for detailed information and is often the first to publish news that cannot be found anywhere else. This time they refer to an internal project involving the Stargate supercomputer. It has been in development for some time, and OpenAI and Microsoft are currently in its third phase. The implementation is expected to last another 6 years, i.e. until 2030, while the aforementioned Stargate will be launched in 2028, and will be intensively developed over the next two years. A little earlier, in 2026, the fourth phase will begin, which includes a supercomputer that is slightly weaker than the target one, but it will be used for the further development of many OpenAI solutions. It is to be built in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin.

Stargate is a huge investment, the total cost of which, according to experts’ calculations, will amount to up to USD 115 billion. Since the supercomputer will consist of a lot of efficient systems, its energy demand will be really high – we are talking about even several gigawatts (GW) of power. Both parties responsible for the project are to lean towards energy sources such as nuclear power plants – Altman himself is already carrying out activities that will provide the required power in the future. The only question left is what graphics processors will be used, because they will absorb the lion’s share of the above-mentioned amount. The most expensive solution is, of course, chips from NVIDIA, while the CEO of OpenAI is reportedly inclined to develop proprietary systems. Over time, we will probably learn a little more about the entire project, which already arouses many extreme opinions.
