ChatGPT even passes exams at American universities. How does it compare to real students?

ChatGPT even passes exams at American universities. How does it compare to real students? It’s been a while since ChatGPT software became widely available. Internet users have already tested it in all sorts of ways (both playful and more serious). Recently, lecturers from American universities (University of Minnesota Law School and University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School) decided to compare what results a chatbot would get on exams and how it would fare against students.

There are many concerns about the OpenAI chatbot and its harmful impact on education. Immediately after the premiere, ChatGPT began to be used, among others, by students to write essays. Are those who fear the erosion of the teaching system caused by the development of artificial intelligence right?

ChatGPT is going from strength to strength. Model 4.0, integration with Microsoft products, entry into the world of science and a paid premium package

University of Minnesota Law School associate professor Jon Choi, driven by curiosity about how ChatGPT could facilitate students’ ability to cheat during exams, as well as its potential usefulness in his day-to-day job as a lecturer, formatted the tests for chatbot capabilities. He then mixed the work of students and artificial intelligence. With no knowledge of which exams ChatGPT “wrote”, the assessment proceeded. It turned out that the chatbot from OpenAI was an average student, whose average grade was “C+” (translating into the Polish grading scale – a plus sufficient). How did ChatGPT compare to other students? On the exam in constitutional law he scored 36 (out of 40 writers), in labor law – 18 (out of a total of 19 papers), in tax law he got the penultimate result of 66, while his paper on criminal law was ranked the worst 75…

ChatGPT – a popular bot is also able to write malware. Anyone can become a hacker?

The evaluators agreed that the chatbot performed better with essays than with multiple-choice questions (particularly poor results were obtained in the case of questions involving mathematical operations). According to Professor Choi, ChatGPT was able to recite legal principles in essays and properly describe cases (without citations), but was unable to provide an in-depth analysis of the problems posed by exam tasks. Of the three lecturers who evaluated the papers, two correctly identified those written by AI. Professor Choi’s conclusion after the experiment is that at the moment distinguishing the work committed by the chatbot from those that were the work of real students is not a difficult task. Additionally, he believes that ChatGPT can be a boon for both faculty and students. At the same time, he points out that law schools may be forced to change the way they examine exams in the future, and he does not see anything disastrous for education in this matter, but only the natural course of things resulting from technological progress.

Time Investigation: There is exploitation and exposure to psychological problems behind the good upbringing of ChatGPT

ChatGPT was also assessed on the MBA (Master of Business Administration) exam at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, but in this case it was not a blind trial. The chatbot received a “B” grade in the exam (the equivalent of the Polish “four”). The examiner was Professor Christian Terwiesch, who was very impressed by ChatGPT. In a column for the Financial Times newspaper, he mentioned many of its advantages, including extraordinary potential in automating certain duties (e.g. preparation of legal documents) currently performed by senior employees, such as analysts, managers and consultants who are… MBA graduates. As you can see, the current results obtained by ChatGPT depend on the field and methodology of assessment. However, considering that he is just taking his first steps, maybe in the near future he will not be just a “3” student on similar exams, but a top student with only “6”s, or “A +”, and distinguishing his works from those whose authors were “real” students will become quite a challenge.
