Discord launches AV1 codec support for NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4000 graphics cards

Discord has reason to celebrate. One of the employees directly related to NVIDIA announced on Twitter that soon users of GeForce RTX 4000 graphics cards supporting the AV1 codec will be able to take full advantage of its potential when streaming video. This will significantly relieve Internet connections and positively affect the quality of the transmitted material.

DISCORD – “social media” addressed mainly to gamers and enthusiasts of modern electronics with a base of active users reaching 150 million active users – introduces the modern AV1 codec. Its implementation will significantly reduce the bandwidth needed to transmit video content. Differences from H.264 are to reach up to 50% with the same or better quality of the output material. The profit for users using a slower connection will therefore be noticeable.

Discord is currently rolling out an update that enables AV1 streaming with GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs!

The upate is rolling out starting this week and will slowly populate to all users. With AV1 you’ll be able to stream up to 4K60 with nitro, at 8 Mbps!

Netflix – the VOD platform introduces streaming using the AV1 codec. What does this mean for users?

On January 25, Mr. Gerardo Delgado, Product Manager for Content Creators at NVIDIA, informed the community about an update that will provide NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4000 series users with the ability to take advantage of hardware support for the AV1 codec when using Discord. According to the above, sharing content in 4K quality and 60 frames will not be a problem on an 8 Mbps connection (4K/60 streaming will still be available only to users with the Discord NITRO package). If anyone has trouble decoding AV1 correctly, the material will automatically switch to the H.264 codec. Currently, the AV1 codec is used by streaming platforms such as Netflix and YouTube.
