Far Cry premiered exactly 20 years ago. The beginning of one of the greatest series in the history of the genreToday, Far Cry is one of Ubisoft’s largest franchises, which has had many different sequels. It is associated primarily with an extremely large open world and a lot of activities in it – which for many people began to become more and more absurd with each subsequent installment. But twenty years ago, no one suspected that it would all grow so much. Moreover, such a huge success was considered a big surprise.

Far Cry appeared on the market on March 23, 2004, taking the market by surprise with many brilliantly introduced solutions that became canon for the entire genre and spawned many subsequent parts.

Mass Effect 2 is already 14 years old – we are remembering one of the best Action RPG games from BioWare studio

And it all started in 1999, when Crytek was born on German soil. The Yerli brothers, descendants of Turkish immigrants, began to implement their long-prepared plans – it is worth noting that their beginnings were quite poor, as they started as a virtual company, and only later transformed into a full-fledged company. The first project was, of course, the CryEngine engine. It was there that the first demo versions of games were created, which at the turn of the century were presented at various shows – primarily the ECTS 2000 fair, where contact with NVIDIA was established. The result was X-Isle from 2001. A technological demo using the potential of the GeForce 3 graphics card gave the opportunity to explore an island full of dinosaurs. The level of detail, unprecedented for that period, so impressed Ubisoft’s representatives that they began cooperation with them.

Mass Effect 3 is already 12 years old – the game had many epic moments, but the ending still evokes mixed feelings

But until the March premiere, there were not many signs indicating that we were about to launch one of the best-selling series in the history of the industry. There were probably several reasons. I remember that if an FPS was highly anticipated, it was, for example, Half-Life 2, which was released in the fall of that year. Far Cry was not particularly promoted by the French giants, which made it even more of a surprise. The story of Jack Carver, a former commando running a transport company, who gets involved in quite a conflict on a tropical island, was not interesting in itself (at least at the beginning, quite interesting motives are developed a bit later, but it’s worth discovering for yourself). In fact, in 2008, the infamous Uwe Boll made a lame attempt to adapt the game into a film.

I still remember that “wow” effect during the first few dozen minutes of the game. After watching the cinematic introduction, in which Jack and his companion were shot and forced to leave the boat, I was treated to a short sequence in the sewers. This detail was one of the most well-choreographed intros I’ve ever experienced in a video game. When I emerged from the claustrophobic tunnels, I was greeted by a beautifully crafted open world that I had never seen before. Looking back, it was because of this experience that over the next few years I was not as impressed with the landscapes in other great titles, including Oblivion.

Despite everything, although the world is stunning and almost devoid of loading screens (seriously, even after two decades I remember my childhood surprise that I thought it was so good), without the attractive gameplay it would get boring to me quite quickly. And Far Cry is one of the best sandbox shooters ever made – including all the latest entries. Starting from the freedom to choose goals and execute missions, through very well-functioning artificial intelligence of enemies that can actively respond to our tactics, to various, responsive weapons. It’s hard to believe that FPS games haven’t developed many of the advantages of Crytek’s first game. I would even say that few of its spiritual heirs can so well combine momentum, fluidity of gameplay and allowing the player to think about tactics on his own. There is also an interesting issue of genetic experiments and the fight against mutants – which was later completely abandoned.

As we know, the production of subsequent installments was fully handled by Ubisoft developers. And so, in 2008, Far Cry 2 was released, which introduced several technological nuances and an exotic African country ravaged by civil war. Although I remember this title quite fondly, it was definitely a step back in many respects, and it was certainly far from the breakthrough of the first one. Four years later, Far Cry 3 was released – in the long run, it was both the messiah and the curse of the franchise. Finally, as befits a large corporation, after creating a fresh sandbox with an interesting plot on a paradise island, interesting activities and development of the main character, and, above all, an antagonist who has gone down in history, it all has to be repeated once again. And several more times – until today. Therefore, the subsequent parts may take place in different settings, but conceptually they are more or less successful clones, and each time the creators want to sell us a new Vaas. What is left for fans of the first part? I guess the only thing is to return to it, possibly adding some decent mods.
