HIPA – The inflow of working capital in Hungary is at a new peak

The value of projects has never been higher than in 2022.

The confidence of foreign investors in the Hungarian economy is unbroken, which is also supported by the investment volume of 6.5 billion euros in 2022, which is considered a record in the history of investment promotion in Hungary. Positive decisions were made in connection with a total of 92 priority working capital investments, which can be linked to the creation of around 15 thousand new jobs and the preservation of tens of thousands more. Eastern countries continue to play an important role thanks to, among others, South Korea, which was the largest investor in terms of investment volume for the third time after 2019 and 2021. Among the sectors, the vehicle industry, electronics and the food industry maintained their dominant position. At the same time, around 20 projects and thousands of new jobs can be created within the framework of high-added-value service industry investments, which also indicates Hungary’s efforts to focus on knowledge-intensive developments in the future.

The value of projects managed by the HIPA National Investment Agency has never been as high as in 2022. The investment volume of 6.5 billion euros will be realized in the framework of 92 priority projects, creating 15,083 jobs. Foreign direct capital investments (FDI) are also balanced in terms of geographical origin, as 48% of capital investments came from the East, while 42% came from the West, and investments initiated by Hungarian companies accounted for 10% of the volume.

South Korea retained its leading position from the previous year and once again proved to be the largest investor by being the country that brought the most working capital to our country in 2022 after 2019 and 2021. South Korea invested nearly 2.8 billion euros and also excelled in the categories of project numbers and job creation, as every fourth new job and every tenth project is South Korean. For example, W-Scope, which produces separator foil for batteries, alone invested 720 million euros.

“However, the influential role of Germany cannot be overemphasized either. German companies were not only responsible for thirty percent of the investment volume, but they also brought the largest number of projects under their roofs, twenty-five, and with their investments they created the conditions for the hiring of six thousand new employees. The latter in 2022 corresponded to 40 percent of all newly created jobs,” emphasized István Joó, CEO of HIPA.

In addition, Switzerland, France, Japan and China stood out among the nations investing in Hungary with the greatest intensity. Hungarian companies with strong capital also demonstrated their activity, which is excellently demonstrated by the fact that they provide 11% of new jobs. Their share of the number of projects is even more significant, as nearly 20% of them are their merit. By sector, electronics, the vehicle industry and the food industry lead the way. Electronics attracted 43% of the total investment volume, and the majority of this is realized in the field of e-mobility. Together, the vehicle industry and the food industry account for 37% of all projects and 44% of new jobs.

“An important result is that in 2022 a positive decision was made regarding twenty projects, creating about two thousand five hundred jobs in the business service centers, IT and R&D, which is an important step in Hungary’s effort to attract as many high value-added service industry investments as possible. make it happen,” added the CEO of HIPA.

The geographical distribution of the projects was balanced: three counties each could host 8 and 7 projects respectively. 90% of all investments concluded with a positive decision are located in rural locations, and almost every county is affected by at least one positive project. With this conscious strategy, it becomes possible to promote the catch-up of the more backward regions.
