The Google Phone app has recently gotten an update where Google finally introduced Caller ID announcement to the app. For those unfamiliar, this is where whenever you receive an incoming call, it will be announced to you, such as the phone number and who is calling. This is useful if you’re not close to your phone and want to see who is calling and deciding if it’s worth picking up.

More often than not, we receive a lot of calls from unknown numbers which are usually spam or robocalls, so it can be a waste of time picking up those calls. Having the caller announced to you would no doubt be useful in these types of situations. If you like the idea of having your own personal announcer, then this is what you need to do.

Enable Caller ID announcement for Google Phone

For starters, note that depending on the phone you use, you may or may not have the Google Phone app. This is because sometimes OEMs like using their own dialer apps, but this feature is exclusive to the Google Phone app so you will need to download it and make sure you’ve the latest version.

Once that’s done:

  1. Launch the Phone app
  2. Tap the three dots icon at the top right corner of the app
  3. Go to Settings > Caller ID announcement
  4. Tap on Announce Caller ID
  5. You can now choose to either have it always announce who’s calling, only when wearing a headset, or never (which basically turns the feature off).

In addition to being a useful feature for day-to-day use, it can also be an invaluable tool for those with accessibility requirements, like those who might be visually impaired, so having calls announced will come in handy. If you don’t see the feature available to you yet, it probably hasn’t rolled out to you or your region, so just remain patient and it should eventually be available.
