The ICC announced that the suspension was due to government interference in the Sri Lankan Cricket Board. The Sri Lankan team played very badly in the current World Cup. The Sri Lankan team had won only two matches out of 9 matches. Especially, in the match against India, they were all out for 55 runs. The Sri Lankan team is at the 9th position in the points table. Due to this, the Sri Lankan team could not qualify for the Champions Trophy series to be held in Pakistan in 2025. The Sri Lankan team has reached an unprecedented low in the current World Cup.
As a result, Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Sports dissolved the Sri Lanka Cricket Board completely and set up a new interim management committee headed by Arjuna Ranatunga.
Following this, the ICC imposed an interim suspension on the Sri Lankan Cricket Board due to government interference in the Cricket Board. Two years ago, the ICC imposed a similar suspension on the Zimbabwe Cricket Board. Even then the government’s intrusion into the cricket boards was blamed.
