Intelligent NPCs will revolutionize video games, but not yet. This is confirmed by the new cyberpunk demo from Convai and UnityIt seems that current technological possibilities related to “artificial intelligence” are also capable of adding more realism to video games. The first projects in which we can see intelligent and environmentally aware non-player characters (NPCs) are already available, and other companies are working on improving this solution. One of the results is the presented Project Neural Nexus demo, which was created thanks to the cooperation of the Convai startup with Unity.

The startup Convai is known for its platform that allows you to create intelligent NPCs. He has just started cooperation with Unity, thanks to which a technology demo was created that uses new technologies – although unfortunately not in the way it should be.

NVIDIA and Inworld are collaborating to create a Covert Protocol demo in which AI will bring NPCs to life

It is more than certain that in the near future there will be more and more games in which we will be able to talk to the characters we meet. Large companies such as NVIDIA are investing in the development of “AI” in virtually every field, and as a result, they are also entering into partnerships with others (such as the recent cooperation with Inworld, which has already been discussed on PurePC). The latest project from the Convai startup was created thanks to the use of the proprietary technology of intelligent NPCs, as well as the Unity Muse tool (which allows for faster creation of video games), and more specifically, integration with its new Behavior function (related to the behavior of specific characters). The game shows us the fictional city of Neo City, and the entire surroundings are taken straight from Cyberpunk 2077.

Xbox partners with Inworld. The goal is to create independent characters that will use the potential of AI

Right at the beginning, we can talk to the first NPC who will guide us through the game. Currently, only a video demo is available, but soon the creators will release a playable version that we can find at this address. Of course, natural conversation with characters in the game will certainly help with immersion, but everything must be implemented at a sufficiently high level. The technology demo shown is currently facing very negative comments. Players don’t like the fact that the NPCs are practically devoid of personality and speak in a very “numb” way – literally like the old speech synthesizers. Unfortunately, it must be admitted that there is a lot of truth in this and the presented demo can be considered more of a “shot in the foot” than showing the possibilities of the new technology. Especially since today’s tools allow you to achieve much better results. So we can only hope that the creators will draw conclusions from the criticism and the next projects will be good enough.
