It has been revealed how much the odometer of electric cars is turned

Fraudsters do not spare electric vehicles either.

The phenomenon of opacity in the used car market has not changed even with the increasing spread of electric vehicles. Many people switch to electric cars in order to reduce emissions and operating and maintenance costs, but the carVertical according to his research, various scams including odometer rewindelectric vehicles are also affected.

The future clearly belongs to electric cars, more and more people are preferring carbon dioxide-neutral and quiet driving over noisy engines powered by fossil fuels. Even though governments are gradually reducing the benefits of electric vehicles, these cars are still much easier to maintain and technologically more advanced than their diesel and gasoline counterparts.

However, the mileage of electric cars can also be manipulated, as these vehicles use the same digital odometer as their fossil fuel counterparts. What’s more, a digital odometer is actually much easier to manipulate than the mechanical meters found in older vehicles.

According to data from carVertical, which investigates the history of cars, 15.6 percent of the car fleet in Europe has had its odometer changed. The proportion of electric cars with falsified mileage is also similar. The odometer was rolled back for 13.4 percent of all electric vehicles. This study shows that buyers of used electric and fossil fuel vehicles face nearly equal risk of mileage fraud.

4 out of 10 electric cars have already been damaged in an accident

In Europe, every second used vehicle has had an accident, 43.6 percent of used electric cars have broken down in this way, which means almost the same number of damage incidents for electric vehicles as for their traditional counterparts. Moreover, since these electric cars are mostly used by urban commuters, the number of accidents is expected to increase as the vehicle fleet ages.

As a result of minor or major traffic accidents, the chassis and the drive chain can be deformed, which can lead to premature corrosion and damage to the battery. Most of the damage to the car can be repaired, but damaged batteries must be replaced for fire safety reasons. These new battery packs are extremely expensive, which is why there are owners who try to sell their cars that have actually been in an accident as “damaged”.

The wound clock also hides the actual battery status

The actual condition of the car can be assessed based on the actual odometer reading. Most electric vehicle manufacturers offer a battery warranty of at least 100,000 km, but they typically last longer than 320,000 km, or even they can outlive the car itself.

The condition of the batteries can be determined by knowing the vehicle’s true mileage. We can’t rely solely on the car’s odometer, because it might be fake, and the system that monitors the battery’s operating time can also be reset. These false values are set by fraudsters in minutes, so we need to take additional precautions in order to be sure of the car we have selected for purchase.

Depending on its capacity, battery replacement can cost tens of thousands of euros, or even half the value of the car. It is the most expensive component in an electric car, even though the cost of running an electric car is still well below that of an internal combustion engine vehicle.

– said Matas Buzelis, head of communication at carVertical.

We can’t expect the odometer fraud to stop for quite some time, since the sellers of used cars can make more profit by falsifying the mileage. Fraudsters specializing in this are quickly adapting to new technologies serving modern cars, so electrifying fleets according to current trends will not solve this problem for now.

I think it is important to dispel the main misunderstanding. Many people think that we provide our own data in our damage history reports, but this is of course not the case. By entering the chassis number, our system contacts hundreds of databases that belong to different institutions, such as insurance companies or law enforcement agencies. The site automatically prepares the report from these reports, containing only data that it has found in international databases

Buzelis added.

According to the expert, Eastern European countries have a particularly big transparency problem, because many cars in these countries are imported from Western European countries or the United States, and a much higher percentage of imported cars have rolled back mileage than domestic vehicles. carVertical and other automotive data providers are trying to address a major problem in the used car market, the lack of transparency, and help both individual and commercial buyers avoid fraudulent used car purchases.
