KIM: nine years ago, so many people did not study in higher education

According to the latest statistical data of the Office of Education, 310,414 students are actively studying at Hungarian universities and colleges this academic year, which represents a nine-year record.

The autumn student statistical data collection has ended, according to the latest data from the higher education information system of the Office of Education, the number of students in higher education this year is the highest since 2014, the Ministry of Culture and Innovation (KIM) announced. According to the information, this year the number of people admitted to higher education increased by 33 percent compared to last year.

The institutions admitted 106,691 students, almost eight out of ten students started their studies with a state scholarship, which means that the state provides an average of HUF six million per person for their studies, for the entire training period. While in 2010, 70 percent of students were admitted to state-funded places, today this rate is around 80 percent – they emphasized, adding that this is also outstanding in Europe and rare worldwide.

Behind the increase in the number of employees is the fact that in recent years, with the change of the university model, a successful turnaround in higher education has taken place. The success of the new system is also supported by the admission numbers for 2023, as the number of people admitted to higher education increased by 33 percent compared to last year – this is the highest number in the last ten years.

KIM also drew attention to the fact that the mean value of the admission scores increased by six points, i.e. it was possible to gain admission with “more valuable points”.

More and more people are recognizing the possibilities of further education, and not only is the number of young applicants increasing, but there is also an increasing interest in courses that can be taken alongside work.
