SMEs can start using EU tenders for more efficient energy use

Following the hectic energy price movements of the past period, the importance of self-sufficiency is increasingly appreciated, and this is increasingly recognized not only by consumers in the residential sector, but also in the business sector. Several factors confirm that even companies with small or medium energy needs should switch to using alternative sources, not to mention those factories, plants and sites that produce in multiple shifts and rely on electricity without interruption during their operation, i.e. they cannot switch it off the electricity at the end of the working day.

In recent years, the price of electricity has risen from the usual 16-40 HUF/kWh per month to 160-180 HUF/kWh. The situation is further complicated by the fact that in many cases the service providers do not conclude a fixed-price contract, but adjust their fees to the stock market price. The good news is that SMEs will be able to use significant EU support for the transition to renewable energy sources after their announcement, which will further increase the unit costs. However, it is important for small and medium-sized enterprises to start planning and developing these projects now, so that they can use EU funds in a timely and efficient manner. In the past two years, solar energy accounted for more than three-quarters of the domestic alternative sources of electricity, and dynamic growth continues to be experienced in this area.

Another good news for small businesses is that it is expected that in the first half of 2023, there will be a number of tender opportunities available to them for energy efficiency developments, which should be exploited. However, there is no need to wait with folded hands until these tenders are published, as those who already have an energy audit, building energy certificate, development plans and return calculations can enjoy a significant advantage in the evaluations, so that when the tenders are published, they can stand on the starting line prepared . The demands for European Union grants are extremely high, so the preparations and planning necessary for successful participation in EU tenders must be started well in advance. For small and medium-sized enterprises, the successful participation in EU tenders usually requires a longer preparation time due to the compilation of the tender material, the development of the project plan and the budget plan, and the creation of self-reliance. It is also possible that the call for tenders and the submission deadline are set within a short period of time, so a late start may even result in the failure to submit tenders.

Preliminary preparation can help the applicants to properly assess the environmental protection effects of their project, as well as to initiate the necessary licensing procedures in time. SME managers for whom these documents are already available are expected to only have to make minor modifications after the announcement of the calls for tenders in order to be able to submit high-quality grant applications as soon as possible. Many small and medium-sized businesses sometimes shy away from installing solar systems because they are afraid of the additional tasks involved in managing the tender project: however, businesses do not need to employ a separate expert for each field, companies specializing in such investments usually take on this burden, and tender monitoring starting with its preparation and writing, and then managing the entire energy efficiency investment, they complete the task.

According to industry calculations, by making use of the tender resources, SMEs can pay for their investment in one or two years, and from then on, the solar power plant system produces the necessary electricity for free.
