There have been a lot of recent reports related to Apple regarding how the Digital Markets Act has impacted the entire company. DMA was mainly intended to contribute to the openness of the iOS ecosystem and change some monopolistic practices. However, the regulation in question applies to all large companies. According to the European Commission, the other companies mentioned, namely Alphabet, Meta and Amazon, are also “deficient” in terms of compliance with the established rules. Throughout the year (from March 25, 2024), proceedings will be ongoing to demonstrate all inaccuracies in each company. If during this period any of them does not comply with the rules or breaks them decisively, they will be subject to a fine ranging from 10 to 20% of the total turnover.

In the case of Apple and Alphabet, the functioning of their app stores is not yet fully DMA compliant. Users should be informed about offers outside the store, and application developers themselves are subject to unnecessary fees and have difficulty promoting their services. In the case of the latter company, it is also about the Google search engine, and more specifically, the fact that search results favor proprietary services (Google Shopping, Flights and Hotels) and limit competition. Apple will have to fully comply with the DMA, so the European Commission will review whether the company “allows users to easily uninstall all applications, easily change default settings and whether they can make an informed choice about an alternative service” (e.g. a web browser – through an appropriate message). Analyzed there will also be a change in Meta’s privacy policy, and more specifically, a new “pay or consent” rule. It refers to the fact that the user has a choice: use the services for free, but with personalized ads, or pay for the lack of them. Most people agree to collecting personal data.
