Recently, The Last of Us: Part II Remastered was released on PlayStation 5, which is a refreshed version of the 2020 hit. At the same time, there have long been rumors that Naughty Dog was already working on the third part (apart from the new IP, which has been confirmed, but nothing specific is known about it). Recently, the documentary film Grounded II: Making The Last of Us: Part II was published, in which, among others, Neil Druckmann. One fragment of the video concerns a possible third part of the game, although this in itself is not yet a confirmation that the studio is actually working on the game.
Naughty Dog has published the documentary Grounded II: Making The Last of Us: Part II. In the film, Neil Druckmann points out that although the third part is not currently being created, there is still room for one story in the brand.
The Last of Us: Part II Remastered – a full-fledged refresh or a cash grab? Comparison of graphics and changes
In the documentary, Neil Druckmann, first of all, emphasizes that for a long time he has had a specific idea for a minor story in the world of The Last of Us, in which Tommy, Joel’s brother, would play the central role. However, it was emphasized that this is a smaller script and that no decision has yet been made as to what medium to include this story in. This means that it may eventually be incorporated into the series (e.g. until season 2) or a smaller game will be created in the future, perhaps something like a stand-alone expansion that will focus on this character.

The story, although ready, was put aside at some point, while the studio focused on improving the operating system itself, introducing a better balance between work and private life and eliminating crunch. Neil Druckmann also mentioned a potential third game in the series. It turns out that for a long time Druckmann did not have an outline for telling a story, but at some point a specific concept was created that could be used in the future. It also clearly suggests that there will be room for another chapter of the story in this universe. Ultimately, Neil Druckmann makes it clear that The Last of Us: Part III will probably be created in the future, but it will probably not take place in the current generation. As we know, work is underway on a new IP and we can expect that the new Naughty Dog brand will debut in the current generation, and not the full-fledged, third The Last of Us.
