Siemens’ 3WA air circuit breaker with wireless functions is also available in Hungary.
Siemens updates the Sentron air circuit breaker portfolio with the new 3WA series. The new-generation air circuit breakers, which are already available in Hungary, as the central element of low-voltage switchboards, reliably protect the electrical equipment of buildings, infrastructures and industrial facilities from damage caused by short circuits, earth faults or overload faults. At the same time, the new 3WA circuit breakers meet all low-voltage power distribution requirements in digital environments. They support software-based design and construction, digital testing and monitoring, and seamless integration into automation and IoT systems. For the first time, updates can be done entirely digitally: users simply download new features from the Internet and add them to the device using an app.
Siemens circuit breakers are designed for 30,000 operating cycles while requiring only one inspection per year. With a potential lifespan of over 100 years, their practical lifespan averages around 10 years.
If technology requirements change, new functions can be easily added to the electronic trip unit (ETU600) installed in 3WA air circuit breakers using the Sentron powerconfig commissioning software and a USB or communication port. The functions are available online and are continuously being expanded by Siemens. Thanks to the extensibility of the functions, users’ investments receive a high level of protection.
High reliability in distributed energy systems
Today, one third of the energy produced worldwide comes from renewable sources. By their very nature, wind and solar energy can cause fluctuations in grid voltage, which in turn can lead to costly breakdowns in the operation of industrial facilities and buildings. According to the European Power Quality Survey Report, 30-40 percent of unplanned shutdowns of equipment can be traced back to inadequate quality power supply. The new 3WA circuit breakers can handle voltage fluctuations of up to 10 percent, reliably preventing false trips and failures.
As active network participants, infrastructure and industrial systems produce, store and use their own energy, and feed it into the network. This requires technology that handles the two-way flow of energy. 3WA air breakers are now able to automatically adjust their protection algorithms to the actual flow direction, thus maximizing the protection provided to consumers of the smart grid.
End-to-end digital lifecycle
For simple and error-free planning, the so-called CAx data can be used to create digital twins of 3WA air circuit breakers. The intuitive powerconfig software is used for parameterization. Like the related application, the powerconfig software also enables remote monitoring of the current contact states and sensors of all switches and thus early fault detection. Integrated communication and measurement functions record energy data and transmit it to automation and cloud-based energy management platforms as well as medium voltage systems. The Switched Ethernet function allows the simultaneous use of multiple communication protocols, such as Profinet and Modbus TCP, so users can benefit from fast and efficient data transfer.
3WA air circuit breakers are available in three sizes rated from 630 to 6300A for AC applications and in one size rated for DC applications of 1000, 2000 and 4000A.
