Madurai Somu was a legendary Carnatic singer of Tamil. Madurai Somu, who has emerged as the most famous Carnatic singer, is also a favorite artist of Carnatic Sangeet fans.
Two of Madurai Somu’s ardent fans used to go whenever Somu’s concerts were held in Trichy. One of the two later got an opportunity to play the tambura in Madurai Somu’s concerts.

Once Madurai Somu’s concert was going on in Tirukkatupalli area. During that time there will be a whole night concert. Being a fan of Madurai Somu, the young man got the chance to play tambura in his concerts and played tambura at that Thirukkatupalli concert as well.
As it was midnight, at some point the young man fell asleep. He gave up tambura as he fell asleep while playing tambura. Due to this, the raga was interrupted for Somu. In anger, Somu slapped the young man on the spot.

Years after this incident, in 1983, Devar Films produced a film called “Shashti Vratham”. Now the young man has become a very popular lyricist. Madurai Somu was singing a song featured in the movie “Sashti Vratham”.
Somu had come to the studio to sing the song. When the songwriter came to the studio to write the song, the two looked at each other. Madurai Somu was embarrassed to see the lyricist.
But the lyricist held Madurai Somu’s hand and said, “You slapped me that day, that slap is the reason for my growth today.”
