Save time writing recurring texts thanks to Gboard’s personal dictionary

To use this function we are going to use a Gboard feature little known, but very useful: the personal dictionary. It is a tool that allows you to add words or phrases that we usually use on a daily basisand that for some reason are not found in the default dictionary (like a nickname or a pet’s name, for example).

However, this function hides a little trick. And it is possible set text “shortcuts”so that when writing a abbreviation, Gboard suggest a phrase or text. So, for example, you can use the abbreviation “my adress” to generate the full text of your address and save time filling out forms or sharing your address with other people.

To use this feature, you just have to follow these steps:

  1. Open any app where you can pull down the keyboard, like a notes or messaging app.
  2. Tap on the three-dot icon that appears to the right of the Gboard toolbar, and then tap on “Settings.”
  3. Access the “Dictionary” section, tap on “Personal dictionary” and then on the language you are using (for example, Spanish (Spain)).
  4. To add a new shortcut, tap the “+” icon in the upper right corner.
  5. In the text field at the top, type the word, phrase, or text you want Gboard to suggest. Then, enter the shorthand at the bottom.

You can add as many shortcuts as you want. When you’re done, you can go to any app where you can use the keyboard, and try typing one of the abbreviations. You will see how, automatically, Gboard suggests the phrase or text that you have associated with the shortened versionand just tap on the suggestion to write it down.
