What Is Argentina, 1985 About?

Based on real events, not since the Nuremberg Trials has a dictatorship been prosecuted. That is until Argentina in 1985.

The story follows the events surrounding the 1985 Trial of the Juntas, which prosecuted the ringleaders of Argentina’s last civil-military dictatorship (1976–1983).

Led by prosecutors Julio César Strassera and Luis Moreno, and with no older prosecutors willing to help with the case, they turned to a group of young law graduates aged 20 to 27.

After the military courts declined to press charges, they led the investigation and the trial against the brutal military dictatorship that ruled in Argentina for almost ten years.

In an act of true courage, and despite all the risks to their own lives, they were determined to bring justice to the Argentinian people. And Argentina, 1985 is their story.

Argentina, 1985 has been inundated with awards from across the globe and won the FIPRESCI Award at the Venice Film Festival in September 2022.

It also won Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes in January 2023. It has also been nominated for a BAFTA and an Academy Award – the outcome of which is still pending.

It does have some tough competition in its category with All Quiet on the Western Front (Germany), The Quiet Girl (Ireland) close (Belgium) and EO (Poland) the other big contenders.
