Windows will have an AI feature that will allow you to erase objects from photos. Just like in Adobe PhotoshopMicrosoft has released another new feature for users who use early versions of Windows (Insider Preview program). All companies are currently chasing AI, so no one should be surprised that the introduced function is related to this aspect. So far, in the system photo editor (via the Photos application), we could remove an unnecessary element using the Speckle removal option. This function changes its name and capabilities.

The new feature Microsoft is bringing to Windows involves the photo editor that’s available in the Photos app. Users will soon be able to use the updated Speckle Removal function, which allows you to get rid of specific elements from edited graphics.

The new update is now available for Insiders, i.e. people who use the Canary, Dev, Beta or Release Preview channels (in the latter case, the new update will also be available for Windows 10). Microsoft announced that in addition to the tenth version of the system, users of Windows 11 and the version for devices with ARM processors will also benefit from the introduced function. The only requirement is the Photos app version 2024.11020.21001.0 or later. If we want to quickly remove a small fragment of a given graphic, we have so far been able to use the Spot Removal function, which still exists in the Photos application. However, it allows you to remove only a small and circular part from the photo. The effects themselves are not very impressive – the option is simply not very functional. Now this is about to change.

Microsoft will soon force installation of the 23H2 update to the Windows 11 operating system

Spot removal will disappear from the editor, and instead we will get Generative erase (officially: Generative erase). Now the function will be able to analyze the background and remove objects more precisely, and in addition, the selection range will be arbitrary – it is possible to select many elements before proceeding to their removal. The company showed an example of using the option, which we can see below. So there is a good chance that the function will finally become useful. In addition, previously presented features that concerned blurring, removing and replacing the background have also become available. For the first time, Windows 10 will also receive the discussed AI options related to graphics editing. However, we do not know exactly when the changes will reach normal users.
