Dell has announced its latest gaming laptops to hit the market, the Alienware m17 R5, and the new Dell G16 which is a brand-new category of gaming laptops from Dell featuring 16-inch screens.

Of course the star of the show is Alienware’s new 480Hz panel offering. Which comes on both the new m17 R5 and the x17 R2. Each laptop features these refresh rates with Full HD resolution. So you’re trading a higher resolution picture for better frames and ultra-smooth gaming.

The new m17 R5 launches today featuring AMD’s Radeon RX 6850M XT, a GPU that features 12GB of DDR6 RAM. It’s also one of the pricier machines as it starts at $2,799.

The Alienware m17 R5 can upgrade to a 480Hz panel

Dell will offer multiple configurations of this new laptop. But, if you value frames per second over resolution quality, you’ll want to go with the new 480Hz panel option. Just be prepared to pay up. Dell says that adding the 480Hz panel to the Alienware m17 R5 will also add $300 to the already high price. Which puts the laptop at a base cost of $3,099.

That’s the price you pay for screens with faster refresh rates. Alienware also says this is the world’s first 480Hz panel on a laptop. So naturally the price is going to be quite a bit higher when you can attach an accolade like that.

The panels also have a 3ms response time and support both AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-Sync technology. Other key specs of the m17 R5 include RAM up to 64GB, a series of ports on the back including USB-C and HDMI 2.1 out, and up to 4TB of storage space.

The G16 provides the essential gaming features for less

Dell G16

If the price of an Alienware rig is a little more than you’re wanting to spend, Dell has the G16. Its first 16-inch gaming laptop that prioritizes mobility and performance for a much more affordable price tag. Starting at $1,399, the Dell 16 squeezes a 16-inch panel into a 15-inch chassis.

The display is QHD+ and comes with a 165Hz refresh rate. Which is nothing to scoff at. It can also be configured with up to 32GB of RAM, up to 2TB of storage, and come with up to an RTX 3070 Ti GPU from NVIDIA. It’ll also run with a 12th Gen Intel Core i7-12700H processor. Dell says the new G16 laptop will launch on July 21.
