Netflix has confirmed that they are working on an ad-supported tier that will be launching in 2023, but according to reports from both the Wall Street Journal and Variety, it looks like the company’s plans might have been moved up to November 2022.

For those wondering why the sudden shift in plans, this is because Disney+ is also launching an ad-supported tier in December, and it seems that the reason for moving up their plans is because Netflix wants to beat Disney+ to the punch. Netflix hasn’t confirmed anything yet regarding the timeline, so take it with a grain of salt for now.

As a quick recap on Netflix’s ad-supported tier, the company hasn’t confirmed how much it could cost just yet, but recent rumors have indicated that it could cost anywhere between $7-9 a month, which isn’t exactly a whole lot cheaper than what Netflix currently offers. While you could argue that you could be saving as much as $2-3 a month, the compromises don’t really make it feel all that worth it.

This is because the ad-supported tier will have certain limitations placed on it in addition to ads. We’re talking about only being able to stream at 480p resolution, no support for offline downloads, and users won’t have access to Netflix’s entire catalog of shows. We’re not sure if these trade-offs are worth saving $2-3 a month, but at the end of the day it’s really up to consumers to decide.
