The Material You theming (codenamed Monet) introduced with Android 12 brings a new lease of life to the stock Android UI. However, it isn’t without its limitations. While it can cleverly change the colors of the UI depending on the wallpaper, it doesn’t offer any customization options. One way to rectify this is using a third-party app called Repainter.

The developer Danny Lin (aka kdrag0n) has now launched the stable version of the Repainter app on the Play Store (via XDA). So what does this app do? Well, it lets users pick colors that aren’t consistent with the wallpaper. Additional options include the ability to alter aspects like tint and brightness.

Repainter won’t fully function with devices running on MIUI or FuntouchOS

Initially, loopholes within the Fabricated Overlay API permitted apps to apply custom colors without requiring root access. But Google eventually fixed this with the January 2022 security update and the Android 12L Beta 1 that launched recently.

The Play Store listing of Repainter reflects these changes. The developer claims that devices running the December 2021 update or older should be able to access the app’s features without root access. However, any newer security release would need complete root access.

Fortunately, there are some exceptions to this, particularly if you own a One UI smartphone, such as the Samsung Galaxy S21. The developer notes that custom UIs from the likes of OnePlus, Sony, ASUS can use the app without any limitations.

But customers of Galaxy devices may have to reboot their unrooted device for some of the app’s changes to take effect. Meanwhile, Pixel owners can only choose custom colors. Users of MIUI or FuntouchOS are recommended not to install the app due to compatibility issues.

So there are a few ways to access the app’s features depending on the smartphone you own. But overall, this is an excellent app to have since stock Android 12 doesn’t provide a customization tool for the Material You theme. While it’s great to have the UI adapt to the colors of the wallpaper, it can also get boring pretty quickly.

The Repainter app will set you back by $4.99 and is currently live on the Play Store. Users can also reach out to the developer through a dedicated Telegram group.
