Online appeared the first impressions of journalists from the new version of the virtual reality helmet SonyPSVR2.

Those who wish could evaluate four projects:

  • Horizon Call of the Mountain;
  • Resident Evil Village;
  • The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution;
  • Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge – Enhanced Edition.
Most of the feedback was positive, especially for the Horizon and Village experiences. Journalist from Polygon even notedthat the new helmet made him “fall in love with VR again” – the projects mentioned look like AAA games that have been transferred to virtual reality.

PSVR 2 resembles exactly an updated version of the original, which was “pulled up” to modern standards. In terms of weight and details, the helmet is similar to its “ancestor”, although the design itself has been changed, and reducing the number of wires to one has greatly simplified life.

The helmet has great little useful additions, like a button that allows you to stop the game and switch to external cameras to chat with someone in the room or avoid bumping into the sofa. And the wheel on the back allows fasten the helmet tightly on the head.

The controllers themselves are reminiscent of Oculus Quest – they are well made, but experts of the same Quest are unlikely to find something new in them. At the same time, the helmet itself more accurately tracks the player’s movements and the position of his eyes – these elements can be configured through the local menu using original mini-games.

Some especially liked the ability to customize the play area, with the helmet camera reading the player’s surroundings. After scanning, he will be offered an option for safe restrictions, but the final option can be changed at his discretion.

But the main feature of the novelty is still technical improvements, thanks to which the graphics in VR games look great, and the differences from the older version (in the case of the same Village) are minimal. In that helps OLED display that supports 4K HDR (2000×2040 resolution per eye).

Horizon Call of the Mountain called an excellent example for the PSVR 2 test, given the numerous effects within the project – wind, fire, explosions, flying mechanical monsters, helmet vibration support, and so on. In addition, the scale of local robots in VR is really impressive.

The player assumes the role of a disgraced tribal soldier carja by the name Riaswho seeks redemption – he first appeared in a comic book series based on the franchise.

The passage will take about six to seven hours, during which you will need to explore the world, climb rocks and fight opponents. Brawls are mostly archery rather than close combat. The behavior of the bow is conveyed very naturally, for example, to pull the arrow, you need to pull your hand back.

The demo kicked off with a raft scene that feels like a ride on an amusement ride with monsters crawling out of every corner. At the same time, the authors did a great job on the details of the machines, lighting and animations.

While running, the player will need to simulate movement with their hands, changing direction through the stick. And for rock climbing, you will need not only to press a button, but also to imitate the movement of your hand, as if it were grabbing a stone. If you make an unsuccessful move, you can fall down.

You also need to dodge attacks in battle with the help of a button, at the same time moving in the desired direction to dodge. In addition, the world itself is extremely interactive – you can pick up and examine objects, and eating apples restores health.

When Resident Evil Village journalists were shown an excerpt from the lady’s castle Dimitrescuwhen the main character Ethan meets the hostess face to face.

In this case, praise was again awarded to the details (you can look at portraits and objects), and also the atmosphere – and Dimitrescu herself in VR looks even more impressive. In addition, the game turned out to have excellent physics related to objects. So, you can throw a knife in the air and try to catch it after.

Ethan himself can now dual-wield weapons. For example, you can take a knife in one, and a pistol in the other, but for shooting and reloading you will need to bring them together, simulating the necessary actions.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners: Chapter 2 – Retribution not so impressed everyone, especially in the visual part, although the media noted the good atmosphere of the project. Zombies can be pushed away with their hands to avoid being bitten, and the feel of a chainsaw as a weapon is perfectly conveyed through the vibration of the controllers.

Least of all journalists rated Star Wars: Tales from Galaxy’s Edge – Enhanced Edition, since the project had a not particularly expressive and short demo. Although the author PlayStation Blog received the pleasure of a local little adventure.

The release of PSVR 2 is scheduled for early 2023, but a more precise release date has not yet been announced.
