Pill-shaped and hole-punch cutouts for the front-facing camera on Android phones aren’t new and they were created in response to the notch on the iPhone. While Android manufacturers have been trying their best to hide the hole to make it less obvious, when the new iPhone 14 Pro models were announced, Apple leaned into the design with a feature called Dynamic Island.

It basically turned the cutout area into a secondary display of sorts to display information, notifications, and more. It is admittedly a clever use of the space and if you want to get it on your Android phone, you can. This is thanks to an Android mod called Smart Bird that basically brings a similar feature onto Android phones.

Now, the app itself is in Chinese and we’ve never heard of the website that the app is hosted on (it’s not the Play Store, obviously). This means that we have no idea if it works or if the app is malicious in any way, so unless you have a spare phone to test the app on, we strongly advise you to be careful and proceed at your own risk.

Alternatively, you could always wait because we imagine that moving forwards, there are probably going to be a ton of other apps and mods that will be hosted in the Play Store that will offer similar Dynamic Island-like capabilities. Also, we wouldn’t be surprised if that in the future, Android manufacturers could introduce something similar of their own in future models or future software updates.
