TikTok is looking to take action to combat misinformation for the 2022 US mid-term election cycle via a revamped Election Center based on a recently-reported announcement from the social media giant.

Its approach for doing just that, conversely, takes a form that will be somewhat familiar to those who have been on the platform for a while. Namely, because the company is taking a similar approach to the one it took in 2020 elections, with a brand new take on the TikTok Election Center.

The ultimate goal, of course, is arguably contrary to how the app typically works. Namely, by aggregating content that users are more likely to enjoy in two categories. The first is the “Following” category, containing content from users that any given person has followed. The second, and arguably equally likely to result in an echo chamber, is the For You Page. As might be surmised from its branding, it brings forward content that’s similar to that users have already ‘liked’.

What does the 2022 TikTok Election Center do and bring to the table?

With the Election Center in place, users will have better access to factual information to combat misinformation shared on the platform. The latter of which will be the result of TikTok flagging content related to elections. Specifically, to call out when the information comes from a candidate in the elections. Or if it comes from a government official, a political party, and similar details. Accounts that belong to associated individuals will also be flagged.

Political advertising won’t be allowed on the platform either. And TikTok is partnering with accredited fact-checking groups too. The purpose of those partnerships will be to ensure that shared content is accurate. With the checking happening across more than 30 languages.

In terms of videos that are being fact-checked, those will temporarily be pulled out of circulation on the For You segment of the service.

Similar to the above-mentioned previous Election Center efforts, however, TikTok isn’t solely focused on content uploaded by users. Instead, it will also be taking a proactive approach in its app. The Election Center will act as a hub for users to gain accurate “authoritative” information about how and where users can vote. That will be on a per-state basis in more than 45 languages.

Moreover, users will be able to register to vote and check the status of that registration within TikTok itself. And, once voting starts, the Election Center will showcase official results information within the app.
