What is the best mobile processor for photos? Snapdragon vs MediaTek

We analyzed the performance of Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and MediaTek Dimensity 8100 processors with Sony IMX766 sensor.

What is the best mobile processor for photos? Snapdragon vs MediaTek

The two big manufacturers of mobile processors today are Qualcomm and MediaTeksince their chipsets are present in 90% of Android smartphones on the market.

One of the main questions that arise when we consider buying a terminal with a Qualcomm or MediaTek processor is which of them takes better photos and now we can answer this question thanks to a recent video from our colleagues at Urban Tecno, which we leave you under these lines, in which they compare two terminals of the same brand, the realme GT 2 Pro and realme GT Neo 3, that have the same main photographic sensor, the Sony IMX766but with different chipsets, since the first of them mounts a Qualcomm processor and the second of MediaTek.

Which processors make better photos: those of Qualcomm or those of MediaTek?

If we analyze the technical characteristics of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and the Dimensity 8100, we verify that the ISP, a processor integrated in the camera that is in charge of processing the photographs, of the first is better than that of the second, since Qualcomm’s chipset has 18-bit ISP and MediaTek’s has 14-bit ISP. Likewise, we have also been able to verify that, at the power level, both processors are very evenas you can see in the screenshot that we leave you under these lines.

On this basis, we will now analyze which of the two processors takes better photos.

Thus, starting with the daytime photographs, the realme GT Neo 3, which is equipped with the Dimensity 8100, achieves results with greater sharpness and higher quality of detailwhile the realme GT 2 Pro equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 offers us some photographs with better contrast, better HDR and better dynamic range. This causes that, when we enlarge a photo, the one we have taken with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 looks more pixelated than the one made with the Dimensity 8100.

Both terminals have a mode that allows us to take photos with their 50-megapixel main sensor and in this regard, the photographs we have taken with the Qualcomm processor have a better dynamic range and a better interpretation of the colors of the scene than those taken with MediaTek chipset.

For its part, when night falls, the results we get with both processors are quite similar, both in terms of image quality and noise level. In this section, we must highlight that, regarding the automatic night mode, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 triggers it more often and more consistently than the Dimension 8100.

When it comes to video recording, we are already beginning to see more differences between the two processors, since the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 allows us to record clips in 8K quality and the Dimensity 8100 is limited to 4K at 60fps.

Precisely recording videos in 4K at 60 fps, the Qualcomm processor achieves better stabilize the clip than MediaTeksince in addition to optical stabilization also applies a digital cropa functionality that the Dimensity 8100 does not have.

If we lower the resolution to 1080p at 60fps, the results are very similar, although videos taken with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 have better dynamic range and those made with the Dimensity 8100 have a more realistic color rendition.

Finally, the videos recorded at night in 4K at 60fps with the realme GT 2 Pro have higher image quality and better stabilizationthanks mostly to digital stabilization, while clips shot in 1080p at 60fps with the realme GT Neo 3 are better, as the Dimensity 8100 manages illuminate areas where it is quite dark without generating noise in the video.
